Meski pekan lalu Apple hanya menghadirkan iPad dengan layanan data 3G khusus AT&T di kawasan Amerika Serikat, kencang tersiar kabar bahwa produsen hardware tersebut akan menghadirkan model CDMA untuk jaringan Verizon.
Silicon Alley Insider mengaku mendapatkan informasi tersebut dari sumber mereka di Verizon. Kabarnya, seperti VIVAnews kutip dari Apple Insider, 2 Februari 2010, iPad tersebut kini sedang dalam pengerjaan.
iPad yang diluncurkan pekan lalu mendukung jaringan 3G. Jika kabar tersebut akurat, iPad versi CDMA tampaknya akan menggunakan versi hardware yang berbeda dibanding perangkat yang akan dipasarkan ke seluruh dunia. Adapun iPad 3G khusus AT&T sendiri baru akan hadir 3 bulan mendatang.
Pada peluncuran iPad pekan lalu, sejumlah eksekutif Apple menyatakan bahwa mereka puas atas kerjasamanya dengan AT&T. Apple juga mengelak spekulasi bahwa iPhone akan tersedia lewat beberapa operator sekaligus, di Amerika Serikat.
Meski demikian, sejumlah analis yakin bahwa iPad versi Verizon akan hadir dalam waktu dekat. Dengan iPhone versi CDMA akan muncul di paruh kedua tahun ini.
Kerjasama dengan Verizon, baik untuk produk iPhone ataupun iPad, kemungkinan akan diungkapkan pada Worldwide Developers Conference musim panas ini. Dijadwalkan, WWDC 2010 akan berlangsung di San Francisco, 28 Juni sampai 2 Juli mendatang

Windows di iPad, Kata Siapa Tak Bisa Segalanya?
Hal ini berarti, pengguna iPad akan dapat multitasking atau melakukan banyak hal sekaligus. Misalnya anda menjalankan Windows pada server, XenDesktop tetap memungkinkan Anda menampilkan program lainnya yang Anda minta di iPad. Jadi Anda seolah-olah sedang menjalankan Windows secara lokal.
“Menjalankan aplikasi untuk komputer OS ini dalam satu waktu berarti bahwa pengguna akan dapat menggunakan iPad sekaligus untuk kerja nyata, bukan sekadar browsing atau membaca buku,” kata Chris Citrix Fleck yang dikutip dari Business Insider.
Seperti diketahui, pekan lalu Apple's meluncurkan produk baru bernama iPad. Gadget yang hanya mempunyai ketebalan setengah inci ini mempunyai berat 0,6 kilogram. Dengan layar 9,7 inci berlayar sentuh, 'gacoan' terbaru Apple ini bertenaga microchip, yang dinamai A4. iPad akan mempunyai sistem operasi yang sama dengan iPhone dan mempunyai akses mencapai 140,000 aplikasi.
Seperti pada teknologi Apple yang lain, teknologi layar iPad menggunakan layar berbasis LCD. Batere iPad bisa dipakai 10 jam. iPad tidak hanya untuk membaca buku. Pada dasarnya iPad adalah tablet, laptop dengan layar sentuh. Apapun yang bisa dilakukan laptop, bisa dilakukan oleh iPad. Begitu pula dengan game.
Sayang sekali perangkat iPad belum bisa memberi fasilitas kamera juga.

Meski tidak selengkap fitur PC, iPad sanggup menjalankan banyak hal yang dianggap konsumen penting dalam netbook, komputer mini yang sangat populer akhir-akhir ini.
Dengan bobot yang sangat ringan, iPad menyediakan aplikasi akses e-mail, Internet, dan media digital seperti buku elektronik (electronic books).
Versi termurah iPad akan dijual seharga 499 dolar (hampir Rp5 juta), lebih mahal dari kebanyakan netbook yang dijual sekitar 400 dolar (sekitar Rp4 juta) atau di bawah itu.
"Orang yang memperhatikan netbook juga akan sangat serius memperhatikan iPad," kata Charles Smulders dari perusahaan riset pasar, Gartner, seperti dikutip sebuah media bisnis terkemua dalam webnya baru-baru ini.
Sejumlah kalangan mengatakan, munculnya iPad bisa mengancam produsen komputer seperti Hewlett-Packard, Acer, dan Dell, ketika pasar netbook berkembang pesat pada quarter keempat tahun lalu saat konsumen dan perusahaan menunda untuk membeli perangkat kerja yang berharga mahal.
Pasar PC pada waktu itu tumbuh 15,2 persen, setelah turun 0,4 persen pada 2008, sebagaimana dilaporkan perusahaan riset IDC.
Menurut analis IDC, David Daoud, porsi substansial dari pertumbuhan itu disumbang oleh penjualan netbook, PC jinjing yang ringan dan berharga murah.
iPad yang juga memungkinkan untuk bermain games, beserta kelebihan-kelebihannya yang lain, ternyata tidak mengejutkan bagi Presiden Nintendo, Satoru Iwata.
Satoru mengatakan tidak ada kejutan dalam iPad dan tampak seperti antusiasme kecil dalam teknologi 3-D (tiga dimensi) serta peningkatan gambar definisi tinggi untuk games.
Satoru menganggap bahwa iPad hanyalah sebuah iPod besar.

Bahkan muncul rumor, Google bakal menyebut pesaing iPad itu dengan nama gPad. Rencananya, gPad akan menggunakan sistem operasi Chrome OS dan akan meluncur pada kuartal empat 2010.
Google sudah memamerkan konsep tablet tersebut di websitenya, dua hari sebelum Apple memperkenalkan iPad. PC tablet Google itu akan berkemampuan multitasking, fitur yang tidak ada di iPad. Kabarnya, Google akan menggandeng HTC asal Taiwan untuk membuat PC tablet itu. HTC juga merupakan mitra Google dalam mengembangkan ponsel Android, handset penantang iPhone.
Melihat keagresifan itu, membuat Apple waspada. "Tim Google hendak membunuh kita," ujar CEO Apple Steve Jobs dalam rapat di markas Apple pekan lalu.

YouTube on the iPad and Dumping IE6
My wife likes to watch YouTube videos. I was thinking of getting her a new Apple iPad tablet, but apparently the iPad lacks an easy way to do this. Why, oh, why did Apple fail to make it easy to access YouTube on the iPad?
A: Even though the Web browser on the iPad can’t play Adobe Flash video files like the ones YouTube typically serves up, Apple did include a special YouTube app on the iPad, similar to the one on the iPhone, that can play loads of YouTube content. In fact, this YouTube app was shown at the iPad launch. The company says the one for the iPad has been rewritten to take advantage of the larger screen, as have all of Apple’s built-in apps. Apple also says when you orient the tablet horizontally, YouTube videos automatically play in full screen mode. However, Web videos using Flash that must be accessed through a Web browser don’t appear to work on the iPad, just as they don’t work on the iPhone.
I have had Internet Explorer 6 as the browser on my home PC for years. Having heard about the security problem with IE6, I wonder if you would suggest that I keep IE6, download IE8 or download another browser.
A: I definitely recommend that you dump IE6, which is outdated and insecure compared to newer browsers. Its latest successor, Internet Explorer 8, has many nice features and much improved security. But, in my tests, IE8 proved slower than its main competitors. So I’d suggest switching to either Mozilla Firefox, Apple’s Safari for Windows or Google Chrome. The latter two are the fastest Windows browsers I’ve tested, but Firefox boasts many more add-ins and extensions that add extra features.

Top 30 iPad games
The iPad may not have a built-in camera, multitasking capabilities, or support for Flash, but it does have a 9.7-inch high-resolution touch screen that many expect will be conducive for gaming. And though Apple only showed off a couple of games at the iPad launch event, the company made it clear that all iPhone apps--including games--would run on the iPad and that it expected many developers to create updated versions of their games that would take advantage of the device's larger display.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether developers will charge you extra for the iPad version of an iPhone game you've already bought (we suspect that at least for some games the iPad version will be a separate purchase). However, we're not going to worry about all that right now; instead we're just going to take a moment to imagine what iPhone games will really benefit from making the move to the big screen, and which PC or online games would be ripe for iPad treatment.

Before the iPad, publishers hadn't much incentive to produce digital textbooks on portable devices. Think about scrolling through your chemistry tome on a Kindle, making clunky annotations on a bland black-and-white screen -- it just isn't as conducive to learning as four-color images and the ability to doodle in the margins. So when software developer ScrollMotion was tapped to create iPad-friendly versions of textbooks, surely students, educators and publishers uttered a collective cheer for the future of digital education. But is the iPad going to make a difference in the world of higher education? Here are five reasons why it won't. Price
One of the biggest gripes among college students is the high price of textbooks. Paired with tuition increases, loan payments, the increasing difficulty of finding post-schooling employment -- and more -- dumping $200 on a book meant only for one semester doesn't sound appealing. So why would a strapped-for-cash student want to invest an additional $500-plus on a tablet PC just to read these books?
Granted, e-textbooks are cheaper than their print brethren, so in the long run, a student may scrimp a few pennies going digital. However, if that were the case, e-textbooks on laptops would be the loudest homerun of the century, and they're not.
Awkward!
Apple makes beautiful devices, and the iPad is no exception. But have you seen the video of Steve Jobs holding it? Looks a little awkward, doesn't it? Without the aid of a prop of sorts, the iPad may sit funny on a desk or table, and catch a lot of glare from overhead lights.
Dependability
It's one thing to leave your textbook in your dorm, or spill a case of Schlitz on it, but it's another matter entirely to watch your sleek, expensive Apple device slither down a storm drain, taking with it all of your data. Sure, the same fate could befall your beloved textbook, but I'm betting you didn't store 10GB of music and apps on it. Let's not forget the potential of innumerable hardware and software problems associated with electronics. I don't think "I got the spinning wheel of death" will make for a fail-safe excuse.

What happens if the iPad bombs? Publishers will have spent thousands of dollars developing e-textbooks for a device that quite simply did not lift off the ground. This will likely embitter companies to Apple and cease manufacture of new products, leaving early adopters holding a paperweight with a lot of potential. But even if the iPad does succeed and publishers have a field day creating innovative tech, that still doesn't make the tablet universal, or even grant it mass-appeal. That means some students will be able to experience Learning 2.0, whereas others will be stuck with 25 pounds of recycled paper and a highlighter.
Limitations
The iPad is missing a lot of key features, especially if it's meant to become an educational tool. Want to jot down notes in the margins? Sorry: no handwriting capabilities. Need to pull up a calculator and Web browser while reading? Whoops: no multitasking. Students have busy lives and warring priorities, and the iPad cannot give them the needed support. It is, as it stands, a glorified vanity item.
Perhaps by using the first-gen iPad as an inspiration for future devices, educational publishers and tech manufacturers can develop an appropriate, functioning portal for e-textbooks and truly bring higher education into the 21st century. But as it stands right now, Apple is not the one to deliver the goods.
